Spain Makes History by Winning the Euro 2024 in Berlin
Spain crowned as Euro 2024 champions after a thrilling 2-1 victory over England, clinched by a last-minute goal from Oyarzabal. This marks their fourth title in history.
In an emotion-laden evening at Berlin’s Olympic Stadium, the Spanish national football team claimed the Euro 2024 title by defeating England 2-1. This achievement marks Spain’s fourth victory in the history of the tournament, solidifying its status as one of Europe’s football powerhouses.
The final, played in front of a packed stadium, began with a dominant Spain managing ball possession and controlling the pace of the game. The English, on the other hand, chose to sit back and wait for counterattack opportunities. Despite these strategies, the first half ended goalless, offering few but intense chances for both sides.
During the first half, Rodri stood out as the engine of the Spanish midfield, excelling in both defense and distribution. However, an unexpected turn of events saw the midfielder suffer an injury that prevented him from returning for the second half, leading to his replacement by Martín Zubimendi.
As the game resumed, Spain did not let Rodri’s absence impact their performance. Only in the 47th minute, a brilliant play initiated by Lamine Yamal culminated in a precise pass to Nico Williams, who scored with a cross-shot to give Spain the lead.
Fortunately for England, their goalkeeper Jordan Pickford kept his team in contention with several crucial saves. Nevertheless, Spain wasted several chances to extend the lead, which England eventually capitalized on. In the 73rd minute, Cole Palmer entered the pitch and, with a powerful shot, leveled the match, injecting drama and excitement into the final moments of the contest.
When it seemed extra time was inevitable, Spain took the initiative once again. In the 86th minute, Marc Cucurella broke down the wing and crossed for Mikel Oyarzabal, who slid in to push the ball and secure the decisive 2-1 score. This goal unleashed euphoria among the Spanish players and fans, ensuring the championship.
The Euro 2024 represents a significant triumph for Spain, not only for the title itself but for the manner in which it was achieved. This team, led by Luis De la Fuente, exhibited remarkable cohesion and depth throughout the tournament. From the group stage, where they authoritatively defeated Croatia, Italy, and Albania, through the knockout rounds where they overcame Georgia, Germany, and France, Spain demonstrated their capability to face any adversary successfully.
On the other hand, England’s path to the final was fraught with ups and downs. Managed by Gareth Southgate, they had to fight hard right from the group stage, securing tight results against Slovenia, Serbia, and Denmark. In the round of 16, they needed Jude Bellingham’s heroic efforts to overcome Slovakia in extra time, while in the quarterfinals, they defeated Switzerland in penalties and achieved a last-minute triumph against the Netherlands in the semifinals.
The performance of both teams in the final reflected the difficulties and triumphs each had faced on their respective journeys. While Spain relied on their possession and control style, England sought individual brilliance from their stars to counter the Spanish dominance.
